This is Version 5.1 of this guide, dated April 2012. It was originally developed by the Defense Personnel Security Research Center (PERSEREC) in 2000 and has had several major updates since then. The content is Unclassified and has been approved for public release by the Department of Defense. It is not copyrighted, so information here may be copied and used in other security awareness products. The content is intended as general guidance only and is not a substitute for review of the official regulations.
